Nurses Notes: Past, Present, Future
Are you ready for change
Hi there, and welcome!
In healthcare, it’s hard to miss the signs of strain—we all know something has to give. We can’t keep doing things the same old way and expect different results. Change isn’t just on the horizon; it’s here.
My name is Sandra, and I’ve been a nurse for over 27 years. Fourteen of those years were spent in ER/Trauma, including three years as a nurse manager, followed by nine years in high-risk labor and delivery. I also managed a low-risk LDRP unit for the remainder of my career. Oh, and I’ve dabbled in travel nursing too, but that’s a story for another time. 😄
Recently, I attended a nursing conference in Seattle, WA, where the focus was on the future of nursing. It was fascinating to explore how far the profession has come, from pre-technology days to a future shaped by AI and innovation. I left feeling inspired and hopeful about what lies ahead.
During a conversation with my daughter about nursing and how it needs to change, she asked me, “Why do you always say you’re ready for change?” My answer was simple: Change is inevitable, in life and especially in healthcare. She followed up with, “Why do you think it’s so important for younger nurses to understand that?” That question stuck with me.
In my years as a nurse, I’ve heard phrases like, “We don’t do it that way here,” or “This is how we’ve always done it.” But what I’ve learned is that change isn’t something to fear; it’s a chance to grow. Technology changes how we work. Best practices evolve. New generations bring fresh perspectives. Change keeps us moving forward.
Sometimes, an idea or practice fails not because it’s wrong, but because people couldn’t—or wouldn’t—see the vision. But here’s the thing: every nurse, from new grads to seasoned veterans, has something valuable to offer. Whether you’ve been in nursing for one year or 40, your unique insights matter.
That’s what this newsletter is all about—learning from each other, embracing change, and shaping the future of nursing together.
Thanks for joining me on this journey. Let’s make a difference, one idea at a time.
See you soon!
Sandra
