Sandra’s Journey: From Overcoming Challenges to Inspiring Change
Nursing Notes: Past, Present, Future
Over 30 years ago, I began my nursing journey as a newly divorced mom raising a two-year-old and a six-year-old. Determined to build a better future, I often brought my well-behaved daughters to my prerequisite classes. One memorable day in pathophysiology, my six-year-old whispered something to the instructor, who smiled and said, “Yes, all mommies have eyes in the back of their heads.” Even while playing with her toys, she absorbed so much from the class—it was remarkable.
Why am I sharing this? Because you might be wondering if you can juggle school, family, or a demanding life to achieve your dreams. I’m here to tell you: you can. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Fast forward to 2020, the year of COVID-19, when life brought its biggest challenges. While pursuing my MSN in Administration and Leadership, I faced personal losses that shook me to my core. We lost our beloved Boxer of 10 years, who grew up with my granddaughter. Two months later, March 2020, I became a nurse manager of an LDRP unit, navigating the chaos of ever-changing updates during the pandemic. Then, I lost my father to COVID, nearly 2,000 miles away in Michigan. Less than a year later, my mother passed unexpectedly. Yet, amidst it all, I completed my MSN in June 2021.

Dogs were sent for a time out. Our granddaughter decided to join them. Can you tell who was the guilty one?
But something had changed. I realized the work environment I was in no longer aligned with my values. Accusations without merit and a culture of manipulation left me drained. I took four months off to reflect, rediscovering my personal values and practicing self-compassion. I knew I couldn’t go back.
Monday, January 13, 2025, I took the leap: I resigned from my six-figure role to prioritize my well-being and start fresh. I’ve embarked on a new journey to become a board-certified nurse coach to guide others toward balanced, fulfilling lives.
My goal is to help people find their way, meet them where they are, and support them in creating a healthier, more meaningful life. Stay tuned—I’ll soon be looking for a few pro-bono clients to start this exciting chapter. Let’s walk this journey together!
